Update 11:00 AM

The Pittsburgh Penguins have released their roster for the players who will be attending training camp come Wednesday.

There are no real surprises to the list.

Prospects of note who will get an opportunity to skate with the "big boys" include: brian Dumoulin, Scott Harrington, Ollie Maatta, Derrick Pouliot, Harrison Ruopp, Phillip Samuelsson, Tom Kuhnhackl, Jayson Megna, Adam Payerl, Tristan Jarry, and Eric Hartzell

The Pittsburgh Penguins rookies closed out their tournament weekend with zero wins and three losses, that is the bad news. The good news is that their record in this tournament is meaningless.

Given that most of the Penguins forward unit consisted of free agent tryout contracts they were never going to have enough fire power to compete. What did matter was the quality of play they received from many of their promising blue chip defense talent. All throughout the weekend Scott Harrington, Olli Maatta and Brian Dumoulin provided consistent high caliber play.

Another bright note from the rookie games was that Tom Kuhnhackl was able to stick out in a positive way. My previous 2 articles praised him for his defensive awareness and work ethic and that did not change for game 3. Kuhnhackl continued to go to the dirty areas and he was rewarded with another goal, this time from right in front of the blue paint. The Penguins are very thin at the forward position as it pertains to prospects, they certainly could use a guy like Kuhnhackl to keep developing and eventually be a factor in earning a roster spot down the road.

I haven’t really touched on the goaltending for the Penguins from this tournament because there really isn’t much to say about it. It was mediocre at best. Rebound control was spotty by all 3 tenders and each of them had goals that were directly related to a bad rebound left out in front. A lot of the goals against were high glove.

Here are the highlights from the Penguins game against Chicago from Sunday afternoon:

The official Penguins website has reported that training camp will open up this Wednesday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will report for training camp, Wednesday, Sept. 11, and will take the ice for the first practice of the 2013-14 season on Thursday, Sept. 12.

The Penguins’ practice sessions and scrimmage on Saturday, Sept. 14 at CONSOL Energy Center will be open to the public with gates opening at 8:30 a.m. Details for the open practice will be available next week.

With the start of training camp it is really going to start to feel like regular season hockey is around the corner, and that is because it is. In the near future I will break down some of the storylines that I think will be most interesting going into training camp. Even though a majority of the roster is set, there are still a few spots that are open for competition.

According to an article written by Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette Sidney Crosby almost pulled off one of the more impressive feats in sport, although it was not in hockey. While he was training out in Colorado he took some time off to hit the links. On one particular 160 yard par 3 hole he came within a foot of getting a hole in one.

"It hit a hill on the right side of the green and bounced down," the Penguins center recalled of the shot. "It was gone if it didn't hit the hill.

There was no bunker there, and the ball had enough velocity to cut through the rough and head for the pin.

It probably stopped short about a foot, We all thought it was going in.

I'm not good enough to go looking for holes in one, If they happen, great, but I'd love to have one, get the bragging rights.

That would have been a fluky one. It didn't even land on the green. It would have been a cool one, but it didn't go."

It just goes to show that it is better to be lucky than good as an amateur golfer. In that regard Crosby is just like the rest of us.
