Is It Really Just a Gesture by Flyers?

After thinking this over and talking to some of the Flyer personnel people, I get the sense that the entire Hal Gill tryout is really a gesture on the Flyers part to help him get some ice time, maybe a game or two, and get noticed.

Maybe someone will pick him up. Gill told me he was fully aware of the FLyers having too many defensemen - who would ever think we'd be saying that _ but he also thinks he something broke his way, he could make it.

If there are injuries throughout the league in September, guys like Gill will get a chance. You can never have too many d-men but the Flyers have 9 on one-way deals which is several too many in a salary cap world.

“My agents talked to [Paul] Holmgren and I’ve been looking for a contract and also trying to get into a camp and be competitive and get into some games,” Gill told me on CSNPhilly.com.

“I’ve been talking to Holmgren. I can go in there and at least be a presence in camp. Be a veteran in camp and help out that way and get in some games. It works out that way.”

Look for the Flyers to give Mark Alt, Samuel Morin and Marcel Noebels a decent amount of ice time and exhibitions, based on what we were hearing this weekend at camp.

The Flyers want to see whether Morin can handle himself against veteran NHLers even though they agree, as a group, he has to go back for more seasoning. There are some things about his game, however, they feel are advanced for his age.

Alt and Noebels are essentially vying to be the first/second "call-up" among defensemen or forwards during the Flyers season. There is no rush here. It can happen.
