Steve Begin will remain within the Calgary Flames organization, but not in the regard he was hoping.
Begin was looking for a one-way deal from the team but couldn't get it and has since decided to sign a one-year contract with the Flames AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat.
Begin, 35, made his return to the NHL last year after not playing pro hockey since during the 2010-11 season with the Nashville Predators. Begin played in 36 games with Calgary during the lockout shortened season and recorded four goals and four assists for eight points.
With the Flames in the midst of a rebuild, they elected to keep spots open for young players to compete for come September.
The Flames also announced that Carter Bancks has signed a one-year deal with Abbotsford.
