Despite a few thoughts which I have already shared with you about how I felt that the Calgary Flames goaltending situation is not a big problem at the moment, like most NHL GM’s I am always looking for ways which a team could improve.

With that being said, there is no denying that the Calgary Flames could struggle with three goaltenders looking to play this year without any real successful records to date as a starting goalies (Ramo, MacDonald, Berra). What I mean to say is that, while a guy like Karri Ramo has potential to step in and either provide average to above average goaltending, he could also end up flopping. If the latter were to be the case, the Flames are then left with MacDonald and Berra who, I suppose, the same could be said about.

What’s my point? Well, the way I see it is that even though the Flames are rebuilding, it would be a shame if more games were thrown away because of poor tending which doesn’t really delineate a positive environment to be in for players. Furthermore, though I like MacDonald as a backup option after his play last year with the Flames, I think the Flames may be wise to look into scooping up an even more proven goaltender like Ilya Bryzgalov and let the goalies battle it out. Why not right? They have nothing to lose…

In my humble opinion, given the Flames current state and the fact that they have a little spending money, why not give a guy like Bryzgalov around $3M for a one or two year deal and see how things go. A deal like this could provide the Flames with a solid 1-2 punch with Ilya and Karri and if that does end up being the case, they can always entertain moving MacDonald to a team needing a solid option as backup.

What do you guys think? There are not exactly a ton of teams out there screaming for tenders and not many others who could afford to take a chance on Bryzgalov. Should the Flames give him a shot to provide added stability to their backend while hoping to avoid a few blowout games if Ramo can’t handle a full NHL season?

As always, thanks for reading!
