As the summer nears its end, the Calgary Flames are preparing for their 2013-14 NHL season, and with that, there are many question marks. Specifically who will play where coming into this new season is by and large the team’s biggest concern, given the amount of leadership that has walked out the door and fresh new faces to enter.

While it is all but certain that Karri Ramo will be the Flames starting netminder coming into the season, who will carry the team offensively and even defensively is left to be seen. With a few new faces in the organization, and a few missing, it will be a tough job for the coaching staff to work out new line combinations.

With that being said the team will likely look to guys like Sven Baertschi and Mikael Backlund to step up this year and carry a lot of the load. If these young players are not able to move to the next level of their games, it will be guys like Matt Stajan and Curtis Glencross who will need to be dominant.

In addition to the new acquisitions over the summer through trade, many are expecting recently drafted Sean Monahan to work his way into the lineup this year, given the lack of depth down the middle for Calgary. If the Flames brass feel he displays the right level of skill and maturation throughout their upcoming camp, fans could very well expect to see a lot of him this year.

Below is the projected line-up for the 2013-14 Calgary Flames roster, as things stand. While I maintain that Flames GM Jay Feaster will likely try to make another move or two before the season kicks off, I do not anticipate a whole lot to be different for this particular squad.

Forwards
Curtis Glencross - Mikael Backlund - Mike Cammalleri
Sven Baertschi - Sean Monahan - Jiri Hudler
TJ Galiardi - Matt Stajan - Lee Stempniak
Tim Jackman - Roman Horak - David Jones

Blair Jones - Brian McGrattan

Defensemen
Mark Giordano - Dennis Wideman
TJ Brodie - Kris Russell
Chris Butler - Shane O'Brien

Derek Smith

Goalies
Karri Ramo
Joey MacDonald

What do you guys think; are the Flames ultimately doomed with a projected roster as displayed above, or could there be some light at the end of the tunnel as they progress through their rebuild?
