It's August which means NHL hockey, albeit preseason, is just over a month away. It also means that for the next few weeks there will be little news or hot topics to discuss.

With that in mind, I decided to take a look at some stats. While I was doing that, I found a few interesting stats directly related to the Calgary Flames and/or their players. Being the kind person that I am, I've decided to share them with you all in today's post.

So without further ado, here are some interesting Flames numbers I found as well as some thoughts on them.

- Sven Baertschi is averaging 2.40 points per 60 minutes of 5 vs. 5 in his NHL career. He's only played in 25 games so the sample size is extremely small, but that's pretty impressive. Some other players who've averaged those same numbers over the last two seasons: Eric Staal, Tyler Seguin, Brad Marchand and Martin St. Louis.

Obviously Baertschi would likely be well below those guys had he played a regular shift every night throughout the last two seasons, but that's impressive company nonetheless.

- More Baertschi facts: he's picked up a point (either the goal or an assist) on every goal the Flames have scored while he's been on the ice. Again, it's only been 25 games but that's very hard to do. Baertschi is loaded with potential, as you all know, and I look forward to seeing what he can do over an 82 game season this year.

- Dennis Wideman takes a lot of heat around the league for his numbers not jumping out at you despite his big contract, but he has been productive as a member of the Flames.

Over the last two seasons Wideman has recorded 26 points during 5 vs. 5 action. That may not seem like that much, but it's the exact same total as P.K. Subban, Drew Doughty, and Tobias Enstrom. It's also a higher total than some quality offensive defenseman like Brian Campbell and Dion Phaneuf, both of whom make more than Wideman.

- Jiri Hudler doesn't get much credit, but he's been very productive for the Flames; especially during 5 vs. 5 play. Over the last two seasons he's averaging a very respectable 2.13 points per 60 minutes. That's 43rd in the NHL among players with 1,000+ minutes played over that span and is better than the totals of a lot of extremely talented players. Evander Kane, Bobby Ryan, Anze Kopitar, Loui Eriksson, Joe Thornton and Alexander Ovechkin are among players with lower point totals in that situation over that same span. That's quite remarkable and pretty surprising, in my opinion.

My take on T.J. Brodie's contract extension with the Flames.

Who will be the Flames starting goaltender this season?

Calgary Flames sign college free agent Josh Jooris.

What is Mike Cammalleri's trade value?
