The Calgary Flames have signed Sean Monahan to a three-year entry-level contract.

Monahan, 18, was drafted 6th overall in the 2013 Entry Draft last month.

The 6'2' centerman is expected to compete for a roster spot on the Flames this fall. He scored 31 goals and recorded 78 points in 58 games this pasts season with the Ottawa 67's.

Before free agency began, Calgary Flames GM Jay Feaster made it be known that he'd like to address the center ice position and would look to bring in a top-6 centerman.

While that was the plan going in, Feaster hasn't yet done so.

That said, he still can. 29-year-old center Mikhail Grabovski remains available and would be a very good fit for the franchise, in my opinion.

He brings speed, skill and compete level to the table and is undoubtedly the best available option for the Flames at center.

Grabovski had back-to-back 50+ point campaigns before the nine goal, 16 point campaign he just finished.

I am in the belief that Grabovski's struggles this past season were due to a lack of playing time and quality linemates more than anything else.

He still has a lot of good hockey left in him and I think the Flames would be smart to bring him on board. Apparently they just might do that as Calgary is one of the most likely destinations for Grabovski, according to Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun.

Whether he ends up in Calgary remains to be seen, but he'd be a good fit and certainly would be an upgrade over some of the centers the Flames have now.

Feaster has said he'd like to keep a spot or two open for one of their young forwards to try and take, but there's no doubt in my mind that the likes of Corban Knight and perhaps Sean Monahan would benefit from another year of development in the AHL or OHL.

Grabovski is out there for the taking and I'm sure Feaster can get him if he wants him. It'll be interesting to see what happens here.
