O Captain! My Captain!

It was a pretty big day in King land yesterday. Love it or hate it Rob Blake was announced as the new Assistant General Manager, and Dustin Brown was signed to an 8-year contract extension.

This extension will make Brown a King through the 2021-22 season. He joins five other Kings (Carter, Quick, Richards, Voynov, Doughty) in being signed through at least the 2018-19 season.

Some brief notes on the negotiations, Brown did it all by himself without an agent (much respect for that), and the deal itself is $47M, with a cap hit of $5.875M a year (Structure: 7.25, 7.25, 7, 6.5, 5.5, 5.5, 4, 4).

The move really comes as no surprise as Brown has been a key part of the organization since his 13th overall selection in the 2003 NHL Entry draft. The Ithica, New York native has appeared in nine seasons with the Kings and played a grand total of 641 games and 50 playoff games. He has 388 career points and 31 career playoff points. He is the Los Angeles Kings youngest captain in history, assuming the post in early 2008 at the age of 23, and the only American-born King Captain to date. He’s also the only King captain to raise a Stanley Cup in the air. He represented the United States in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics where he won a Silver Medal, and has also won the NHL Foundation Award in 2010-11 for his outstanding community service work with the KaBOOM! program.

Enough with all the accolades though, here are just a few of my favorite moments from Brown as a King. Feel free to share yours in the comment section.

The Hit.

Maybe an illegal hit by today’s standards, but I will never forget a 22-year-old Brown absolutely demo-ing Matt Cooke. That real speed shot at the end...wow.

Brown’s first career fight after checking Dallas goalie Marty Turco

The Hat Trick after unending trade rumors surrounding Brown at the 2012 trade deadline.

One of the niftiest goals, that’s right niftiest, between two King players in a long time. Love the call on this by Remenda and Randy Hahn by the way. Two of my favorite announcers outside of Miller/Fox and Ralph and Razor.

and finally,

Cheers and congrats to Dustin, hopefully there are many more moments to celebrate in a King jersey by the end of this next contract.

Additional Notes:

Jordan Nolan has now avoided arbitration as well signing a 2-year deal worth 700k a season. This leaves the RFAs to just two now with roughly $1.5M to spare. Writing on the walls is certainly there for one of Kyle Clifford or Trevor Lewis.

Also, if you want to follow me on twitter for Kings related stuff my handle is @SirJDL

As a bonus you will also hear me complain about my fantasy baseball team, cry about the woes of Newcastle United, and make It's Always Sunny and Seinfeld references whenever possible.
