Big Signings & Jovo/Versteeg Injuries Will Give Kids A Chance

Good news as both Aleksander Barkov and Jacob Markstrom signed 3 and 2 year deals, respectively. The Panthers continue to solidify their core for the future, and any nervousness amongst Panther fans surrounding the Markstrom situation can now subside. Looking to the season, it's the old guys that are creating some questions.

Grizzled veteran Ed Jovanovski was hurting bad last year, and there were grumblings it could be bad enough to force him into retirement. For better or worse, he's feeling better, and is expected to be back in the lineup sometime next season.

Kris Versteeg was snakebit last season. He was blasted into the boards on a cheap shot from behind by Alex Ovechkin, which sidelined him for several games. He then hurt his knee badly soon after returning, effectively ending his season.

Neither player will be ready to go at the start of the season, and the question will be who will take their places.

Colby Robak is the likely leader to replace Jovo. He was called up last year for 16 games due to the mass injuries. Although he only had one assist, he also was only a -1 on a terrible team, so with more support around him he could start becoming a very solid defenseman. Potentially top 4 in time.

Other defensive possibilities: Matt Gilroy, Michael Caruso, Jonathan Racine

Vincent Trocheck came to developmental camp last week with a buzz around him. Last year's most outstanding player in the OHL did not disappoint as he showed great hands and speed, and could very well earn a spot until Versteeg returns. It's a long shot because I'm sure Tallon and Santos would like him to develop in the AHL for a while, but hey, on this team, if you even have the CHANCE to score goals, you're in.

Other offensive possibilities: Quinton Howden, Bobby Butler, Scott Timmins

Regardless of who fills in for the injured vets, there is no question this team will be healthier and hungrier than what they showed last year. The big problem is the entire division improved more for the most part, but that is a discussion for another day.
