3rd jersey

Ut oh. Did I hear this correctly? The Sabres new jerseys could be gold? Check out what Icethetics has on this news:

I heard from a source I trust that Buffalo's new sweater will actually be gold, rather than the blue we've come to expect. Hence the eye-grabbing background color in the graphic above. Is it true? Guess we'll find out in a couple days.

This jersey will replace the royal blue alternate the Sabres wore for two seasons to mark their 40th anniversary. In their four decades, the team has worn blue, navy blue, white, black and red jerseys. But never yellow. That seems to be Nashville territory. Can the Sabres do it without looking like a copycat?

I'm not sure I'm going to be a fan of these jerseys, if indeed, they are gold. Buffalo better be careful because these could look really bad. The Predators do have gold ones and I like them, but what can Buffalo do to theirs to make it different than Nashville?

Camp notes:

Rasmus Ristolainen will not be playing for the Amerks this season. He will either play for the Sabres if he makes the team or he will go to Finland. Ristoainen was wearing #27 this morning and Zadorov was wearing Andrej Sekera's old number, #44.

“It gives us an opportunity to see the progress of our players that have been here for a while and how they’re coming along. We know the players from Rochester and what they’re doing because we watched them play, but players that are still juniors or college, it allows us to bring our drafts in and get them acclimated to Buffalo and what we’re looking for out of them.” -Ron Rolston

I think the Sabres may become a tougher team much quicker than many people realize. The more of these players that make the team in the next year or two, Buffalo could be a big team on defense.

“One component is an overall educational component of Doug being in the weight room with them where he’ll be covering strength training, nutrition and hydration. We’ll be talking about their growth and development as players and as people and they get to learn a lot about what we’re doing and where we’re going so it’s really beneficial for both sides.” -Ron Rolston

Worst stretch in franchise history

I came across one statistic yesterday that I believe to be enough of a problem that Regier should go.

The Sabres are in their worst stretch of hockey as a franchise. After looking through the year-by-year results for the team, they've never been worse. Buffalo has made the playoffs just four times in the past 11 seasons. They only missed the playoffs six times in the previous 31 years.

Now, I'd say it's definitely time for a rebuild, but it really made me wonder why, and how, Darcy Regier still has a job with the organization.

With Regier as the GM, the Sabres have made the playoffs eight out of 15 seasons. He's barely over the 50% mark, but that could change after this year. I believe when Ruff went, Regier should have went, too. A true rebuild could have started with the management. It may take some suffering?

Despite a couple of amazing seasons, Sabres fans have suffered through the rest. No other team would put up with this kind of track record for this long.

I always forget that Regier has some NHL action himself. He played 26 regular season games with the Cleveland Barons and the New York Islanders. He never scored on his 17 shots, but did have two assists and 35 penalty minutes.

As always, thank you for reading!
