The Pittsburgh Penguins have released some information about their prospect development camp for this summer. The camp will run from July 16-20 and will include most of the Penguins high end prospects.

You can find the official release of information at the Penguins official website here

It is presently unclear how much of the camp will be open to the public at this time. The one event at camp that will definitely be open to the public is the final scrimmage that will be played at the Consol Energy Center. The scrimmage is set for Saturday July 20 at 3 PM. Both admission to the game and parking is free. If you are in the Pittsburgh area on the 20th you can get a great look at some of the Penguins best young talent for a price that can’t be beat.

Some of the players that are expected to be at the camp include, but are not limited to:

Defensemen: Olli Maatta, Scott Harrington, Derrick Pouliot and Brian Dumoulin.

Goalies: Eric Hartzell and Tristan Jarry

Forward: Oskar Sundqvist

Given that there was only one forward listed it really shows how thin the Penguins farm system is at the forward position.

Head coach Dan Bylsma will not be running the camp. The Penguins released the following information about how the camp will be run:

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach John Hynes, WBS assistant coach Alain Nasreddine, Penguins assistant to the general manager Tom Fitzgerald, Penguins player development coach Bill Guerin, Penguins goaltending development coach Mike Bales, Penguins strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar and WBS strength and conditioning coach Joe Lorincz will serve as camp instructors.

This is the first on ice activity session the Penguins will run in preparation for the 2013-2014 season. It gives the organization a nice opportunity to re-evaluate the progress of their prospects while being able to asses them in person. This camp should paint a clearer picture for team management on how close some of the defense prospects are to being ready for the NHL. A strong camp from Brian Dumoulin could really help his chances of making the jump to the big club for the 2013-2014 season. Dumoulin’s entry level contract would be a great bonus for the Penguins to utilize while they try to open up as much cap space as possible to fill other needs.

On ice activities are not the only thing the prospects will be doing at development camp. Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette touches on some of the other activities the Penguins prospects have done in the past:

These summer camps, which were started with the Penguins after GM Ray Shero arrived, have become a popular and normal summer activity for NHL clubs. Players get indoctrinated into the Penguins' systems, get evaluated, get to know each other, participate in a few off-ice activities (Paintball, bowling and scavenger hunts have been done in the past) and are briefed on things such as nutrition and dealing with the big, bad reporters of the world.

If any other details are released about camp, I will be sure to pass them along.
