Something in the works?

After Darcy Regier stated during this week's press conference, the Sabres were not going to offer Sulzer a contract. However, Buffalo just signed him. Now the defense is even more crowd, but not exactly with amazing talent. After Ehrhoff and Myers, there are seven defensemen fighting for the final four spots.

"GM Darcy Regier said at this week's free agency preview press conference that he would not offer a contract to Sulzer or fellow UFA Adam Pardy prior to Friday. But any team, like the Sabres learned the hard way in 2006, needs depth at defense and in the minor leagues.

So the Sabres now have nine defensemen with NHL experience -- Christian Ehrhoff, Tyler Myers, Mike Weber, Mark Pysyk, Jamie McBain, Chad Ruhwedel, Brayden McNabb, Sulzer and Bagnall. Of course, the experience of Ruhwedel (seven games with the Sabres) and Bagnall (two games with Minnesota) is limited." -Mike Harrington, The Buffalo News

I do like Sulzer and don't mind him staying here, but something has to be done. A trade is in order big time. I understand that the team is rebuilding, but I'm not exactly sure what the team has in mind right now. I'm thinking a couple trades are going to happen. Regier has to be focusing on them rather than free agents.

Especially with the surplus of defensemen, Buffalo could send out some players and replace them with younger talent. The biggest trade were waiting for is the Miller/Vanek one if that happens at all. Personally, I'm waiting to see Drew Stafford on his way out. I don't get why he has an "A" but he could be gone soon as well.

There's a lot of question marks surrounding this team, and it's tough to tell exactly what it will look like come October. Plus, were the Sabres really as bad as their record showed last season? How much will Ron Rolston help this team over Lindy Ruff? Still a few months away, but there are more moves to be made by Regier.

Here is a look at where the top free agents went yesterday. A bunch of big name players all heading to new teams. Five of the ones on the list below will be in the same division as the Sabres.
