The Flyers have brought in goaltender Ray Emery for a second stint with the club. According to Darren Dreger, it's a one-year deal for$1.65 million.

I will post my thoughts on the Emery signing later.

Flyers Free Agency Friday: Fireworks or Dud?

The first day of free agency can produce significant chances in the NHL landscape or it can prove to be much ado over changes that do little or nothing to improve teams. Most years, the Philadelphia Flyers are in thick of trade and free agency-related rumors on this day.

Having already made major roster moves with the acquisitions of Vincent Lecavalier and Mark Streit and needing to clear out cap space before or after they make any additions, the Flyers' number one priority this weekend is to sign or trade for a goalie to play alongside Steve Mason. The hottest rumors right now suggest that former Flyers goaltender Ray Emery will leave Chicago to return to Philly.

Yesterday, the Flyers made another huge move in re-signing team captain Claude Giroux to an eight-year contract extension with a cap hit of $8.275 million and a full no-movement clause. The cap hit is slightly higher than I hoped it would be (I was hoping Philly could get it done at around $7.5 million), but the new eight-year maximum on contracts makes it harder to tinker with the cap hits on deals such as these. The contract is not THAT much higher, however. The new contract will kick in for the 2014-15 season.

Philly also made a minor re-signing yesterday in re-signing veteran checking forward Adam Hall to a one-year contract worth $600,000 before he hit unrestricted free agency today. The player performed well at the bottom end of the forward lineup after being claimed on waivers, adding size, faceoff ability (winning 59 percent of his draws) and penalty killing support. He is a useful re-signing, especially with the departure of Ruslan Fedotenko for the KHL. Hall can play either center or wing as needed.

As the Flyers make moves today, I will update the blog.

Final note for now: Best wishes to Danny Briere in Montreal.
