As you know, I basically have no immune system. Been sick as hell for the last three days, hence the lack of blogs. Today's blog is going to stink because I'm still sick, but it's better than nothing.
- Colorado isn't going to take a defenseman. No surprise there, although I'm a little confused by Joe Sakic went public with that thought. Considering the team's depth at center, I wonder if Jonathan Drouin is their guy?
- And what does Florida do in the #2 spot if they have Seth Jones or most-likely Drouin to pick from? I say they go Jones.
- There's always one guy every draft class that falls way below their ranking for some reason. Cam Fowler, remember when that happened to him? I think Ryan Murphy was one of those guys, although I kinda see the point to that. He's brutal.
- For those of you on the Shawn Horcoff buyout watch, there is a 48 hour grace period between when the Bruins win the cup and before anyone can do anything about compliance buyouts.
- Should be a really lame event, the compliance buyouts. We know Horcoff is gone. We know Daniel Briere and Ilya Brzgalov will be bought out. Maybe Montreal buys out Kaberle. Little junky moves like that. Ville Leino in Buffalo, or Mike Komisarek in Toronto. Guys you wouldn't want to sign anyway. Sad to say, but Horcoff will actually be one of the better players to go...Someone will offer him $2mil per as a UFA and he'll end up making a few bucks in the exchange.
- The fact there seems to be a bidding war starting for Jonathan Bernier makes me sad.
- The Conn Smythe winner has to be Tuukka Rask, doesn't it? That or Chara.
- Am I the only one who went "who?" when the Flames fans went crazy yesterday over Corban Knight choosing them over the Oilers? You know times are tough when...
- Why do I get the feeling Jay Feaster is going to do something incredibly stupid at the draft?
- Why do I get the feeling Craig MacTavish is going to do next to nothing at the draft?
- Word is, Hartikainen bolted from the Oilers because they wouldn't offer him a one-way contract.
- Local media keep trying to encourage Oilers management to re-sign Mark Fistric. It's funny how this happens. Every year, at least once, Jim Matheson says the Oilers have interest in Drew Stafford. Why? They don't. They would have dealt for him already if they did. People see the Oilers current D and think it's too small...There needs to be someone tough and mean...So they do the math, and Fistric is needed. Doesn't matter if the guy can play hockey or skate. Let's add him to toughen us up. Lame.
- There's a whole list of goofs I'd like to see MacT deal at the draft: Eager, Belanger, Omark, etc. I think the market is so soured on these guys, the Oilers couldn't pull a 7th for any of them.
- GM meetings this week. Some thing there will be deals-o-plenty, but I'm more cynical. I think the draft is where things are going to go crazy. This week is more about kicking tires and seeing what kind of market is out there.
- If there is a big deal to be made at the draft involving the Oilers, my money is on the NY Islanders being the other team. Isles have too many quality young centers, and that Nino kid who wants out.
