Flyers Going Up New Streit

So the Flyers now own Mark Streit's rights.

I know people talk about the entire Dan Hamhuis rights' debacle but that was because the Flyers didn't believe the rumors he never wanted to play in Philly. They were true as the club found out.

Streit wants to be a Flyer. Which means he will sign. I'll bet the few Canadian dollars I have left from the last Ottawa trip that Flyers GM Paul Holmgren already had a number in mind, a length of contract, and it's just a matter of day before something gets done.

Pat Brisson is his agent. Ironically, Brisson is negotiating this deal when in a few weeks, his top Flyer client, Danny Briere, is going to be handed a buyout. Cruel world indeed.

The Flyers are nowhere done with this transaction. I think they will still be looking for an impact younger d-man in a trade "if" it presents itself.

There is also the matter of upgrading at wing, what to do about Simon Gagne and others, and whether they go through with the rumor of buying out Ilya Bryzgalov.

I still say Bryz makes it through the summer only because club chairman Ed Snider has given him 2 votes of confidence since March, including one in the Inquirer last month. Snider wanted Bryzgalov, made it known that he was "his" guy and is standing behind him.

Should be interesting to see how it plays out ...

Like Bill Meltzer, I don't think Streit is the answer to all the Flyers' problems on the back end but his presence is a huge upgrade over what they have right now in their top 6-7-8.

"It's an exciting time for me," Streit said. "Obviously I'm excited to get traded to
Philadelphia. I'm not sure what's going to happen the next few weeks - or days -
it's part of my agent's job to work that out with Paul.

"Philly has an unbelievable team. It's a great franchise and a great city and it's a hockey town for sure. The fans there are great and that's why I always liked playing in Philly.

"The team is really good. It's well-structured. It's young and fast and it would be a great honor to play for the Flyers."

Good deal or bad deal? Remember, the Flyers didn't give up much here ... Free agency begins July 5.
