2013 IIHF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: FLYERS UPDATES

YESTERDAY'S RESULTS

* Russia had little trouble dispatching Latvia by a 6-0 score. Ilya Bryzgalov earned a 15-save shutout.

* Denmark threw a scare into Canada, holding a 1-0 lead and holding even in shots through the first intermission and early portion of the second period. Two closely spaced second period goals for Canada turned the tide of the game. Matt Duchene knotted the game at 1-1 and added a spectacular insurance goal in the third period, while Steven Stamkos tallied the game winner on the man advantage.

Flyers forward Claude Giroux, who played on a line with Stamkos and Andrew Ladd, assisted on Stamkos' goal. On the play, Stamkos stepped out with the puck from behind the net, moved laterally across the crease from left to right and tucked the puck into the net. Giroux logged 20:25 of ice time and registered nine shots on goal. He also won eight of 12 faceoffs.

Fellow Flyers Wayne Simmonds and Matt Read started the game together on a line centered by Eric Staal. Simmonds did not record a point but played a part in the first Duchene goal. With Canada on the power play, Simmonds muscled aside Danish defenseman Daniel Nielsen as the two battled for a loose puck around the net. Duchene swooped in, claimed the puck and scored moments after the expiration of the man advantage. Simmonds finished with one shot on goal in 15:04 of ice time. Read had two shots on goal in 12:25.

Flyers defenseman Luke Schenn was paired with Brian Campbell. The elder Schenn brother skated 16:11 of ice time and was plus-two for the game.

For Denmark, Flyers rookie defenseman Oliver Lauridsen received 20:43 of ice time. He was not out for any of the three Canada goals. Lauridsen played a solid all-around game but did have a pair of turnovers under forechecking pressure (no scoring chances resulted) and took a minor penalty for high sticking late in the first period. Oliver's brother, Markus, is also a defenseman on the Danish team but they are not paired together. Oliver is paired with Jesper Jensen, who plays in Sweden for Rögle.

* Bouncing back from a regulation loss to Switzerland, Sweden held off the Czech Republic by a 2-1 score. Both Flyers defenseman Erik Gustafsson (22:13 TOI, +2, one shot on goal) and forward Jakub Voracek (16:12 TOI, -1, two shots on goal) recorded one assist apiece for their respective teams. Gustafsson earned an assist for an even strength goal by defense partner Henrik Tallinder. Voracek's assist was the primary helper on Jiri Hudler's power play goal that stood as the Czechs' lone score.
