Twenty years of thunder are in the books, as your Tampa Bay Lightning have wrapped up their 2013 National Hockey League season. While the Lightning disappointed fans by not making the post-season, one player did his part for the team and was anything but second-rate. After tallying 60 points in 48 games this season, Martin St. Louis has clinched the Art Ross Trophy, awarded to the league’s leading point scorer.

At nearly 38 years old, he becomes the oldest player in league history to walk away with that honor. Even though the 2013 season was disappointing in so many ways, St. Louis has a heck of a lot to be proud of. He continues to be the Lightning’s offensive leader, and the Lightning’s emotional leader. He’s small in stature, but he makes up for it with unmatched heart, soul, and dedication to his craft. His work ethic and positive presence is felt throughout the Lightning family night in and night out.

When asked by TampaBayLightning.com about the honor, Marty expressed that he would trade his personal achievements, which he is obviously very proud of, for a post-season run with his team. His humble approach to the game will prove to be so incredibly vital as the Bolts work to develop players like Richard Panik, Tyler Johnson, and Brett Connolly among others. The opportunity to suit up with one of the league’s best role models will serve the Lightning's young guys exceedingly well.

Given the team’s struggles this past season, waking up post-mortem with a positive attitude might be difficult for some fans. However, being proud of a player like Martin St. Louis should make it easy. With over 900 points in his career, Marty has overcome so much in order to accomplish all that he has. Not only does he continue to put up godly offensive numbers, but he is also one of the most respected players in hockey. As Lightning fans, it’s so easy to get caught taking him for granted.

As Marty aims to hit 1000 career points next season, the Lightning will be looking to build on a number of good things that came out of the 2013 campaign. With the draft and free agency just around the corner, there’s a ton to look forward to when it comes to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Cheers to you, Martin St. Louis! You made this season watchable when so many fans wanted nothing more than to turn off their television sets.

As always, thanks for reading.
