Recent reports out of Sportsnet and numerous Calgary news sources have indicated that not only has Jarome Iginla listed his home for sale, it has also sold. There were a few fans who felt there could be a chance that the former captain returns to the Flames after contending with the Penguins for the 2013 Stanley Cup, however that notion seems to be all but dead.

Btw Jarome, nice place you’ve got! Yes, Iginla reads my blogs on the daily…him and I are tight like that!...

Now back to reality…Given his success with the team so far, I would imagine that Iginla would be offered an extension beyond this season with the Penguins if they do not win the cup. I would remain doubtful that the team extends the veteran after winning a cup, though keeping a guy like Iginla around is never a bad idea nonetheless. Iginla currently has a nice situation at hand where he could either take the Penguins best offer to stay in Pittsburgh, or could test his chances on the market and provide his services to the highest bidder. Though as I mentioned, it’s all but likely that he looks to extend his contract with the Penguins if they fall short of the Stanley Cup this year, as that is ultimately his goal at this point in his career.

With respect to the Flames, I could envision Iginla playing a few more years towards a Stanley Cup, and with a ring or not, return to the Flames in his final few weeks to retire a Flame. I do not see the Flames putting in a bid for Jarome this summer if he does hit free agency, and not because they would not love to have his services once again, moreso because of the price he would require in addition to the fact that they are several years removed from contending for the cup. Sorry folks, but unfortunately Iginla is not returning to cow-town anytime soon, or at least not as a member of the Flames.

I suppose it’s best for the current Flames team anyways, as with their star players either being traded or on the verge of retirement, we finally get the chance to see what the Flames DO have in their cupboards and what the future may hold for certain individual prospects. Given their goals to reach the playoffs each passing year, the Flames have rarely allowed their youth to develop at the NHL level or show the management group what they can offer, and I’ve got to say it’s nice to see them play their hearts out…in spite of the fact they’re ruining our chance at a high draft pick!

I’m a little tied up today and might not be able to provide much more chatter than this, but I will have my next draft class discussion blog up shortly.

Thanks for reading!
