MINI-PREVIEW 8:30 AM CDT
It is not unusual at the minor league level for a team to a play the same opponent in three straight games. It is, however, an unusual quirk of the NHL's 2013 post-lockout schedule that the Dallas Stars (16-17-3) are playing the Anaheim Ducks (25-7-5) tonight for the third successive game.
Anaheim has won the first two games by a combined 9-2 score, shutting out the Stars 4-0 at the American Airlines Center and then grabbing a 5-2 win on home ice. The rubber match in Anaheim tonight starts at 9:00 p.m. CDT and will be televised locally on Fox Sports Southwest Plus.
Tonight's game is the fifth and final meeting of the season between the Stars and Ducks. The Stars won the first meeting and took a point from a shootout loss in the second game, but the last two games haven't been very competitive. Of course, following the trade deadline, the stripped-down Stars' priorities have changed from competing for a playoff spot to getting playing time for young players who will be counted on for the future.
The Ducks bring a 14-4-0 home record into tonight's game. The Stars are 8-8-1 on the road.
