The Maple Leafs made one deal before the 3pm NHL Trade Deadline, as they acquired defenseman Ryan O'Byrne from the Colorado Avalanche for a 4th round pick.

According to TSN's Darren Dreger, Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff has decided to stay in Calgary and would not report if the Leafs traded for him.

This means that GM Dave Nonis moves on to Luongo, a Plan B like Khabibulan or Clemmensen or stays with Reimer and Scrivens. Stay tuned

The Maple Leafs will be deeply involved in the pursuit of a veteran goaltender before the 3PM NHL Trade Deadline. The question is whether the recent rumors of attempting to convince Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff to come to Toronto are an expression of genuine interest or an elaborate ruse to pay a more reasonable price for Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo.

The focus of Leafs GM Dave Nonis appears to be limited to those two, but if the price for Luongo remains steep or they cannot convince Kiprusoff is commit to playing in Toronto, the Leafs Plan B may be Florida backup Scott Clemmensen or Edmonton’s Nikolai Khabibulan.

Nonis commented as recently as Tuesday that his interest in a veteran goaltender is contingent on what assets he would have to give up to obtain him.

TSN’s Darren Dreger mentioned the possibility that the Leafs are pursuing Kiprusoff so publicly to get Vancouver GM Mike Gillis to lower his price for Luongo. With the Canucks obtaining Derek Roy from Dallas yesterday, the Canucks may have shifted their interests away from center Tyler Bozak and more towards a winger to play with center Ryan Kesler, like Nikolai Kulemin or pending UFA Clarke MacArthur.

Dreger reports that the Leafs think that Kiprusoff would come to Toronto, but their chief concern is how much the 36 year old veteran has left in the tank.

Toronto may have more in the planning stage than just the pursuit of a goalie. They may still be interested in adding a defenseman and with Dallas in full sell mode, veteran Stephane Robidas might be available.

The Leafs may have someone interested in Tim Connolly, as they have scratched the veteran center from the Toronto Marlies – Lake Erie Monsters game this morning.
