Update - Jay Bouwmeester has been traded to the St Louis Blues, adding another first round pick for the Flames in this years draft. Though the pick is conditional on the Blues making the playoffs, or else it becomes a 2014 first rounder. The Flames are moving players outside of their plan, and stocking up on picks/prospects.

There are several reports across twitter currently that the Calgary Flames have given the Toronto Maple Leafs permission to speak with their current veteran netminder, Miikka Kiprusoff.

It is no secret that the Leafs have been looking for some veteran help between the pipes for several months, most noticeably Canucks`Roberto Luongo. Given the likely asking price for Luongo, in addition to his sizeable contract, it appears the Leafs may have continued to look elsewhere for help. Kiprusoff has very respectable numbers over the last few years, and has only one year remaining on his contract.

The problem with this potential trade scenario between the two clubs is that Kiprusoff has recently stated that he would not report to a new team if traded, as it seems he is wanting to either retire after this shortened season, or play his final year in Calgary. There has been talk from TSN that Kiprusoff may be open to moving to a few teams, provided he is part of the discussions. Aaron Ward from TSN believes the Leafs brass and Kiprusoff`s agents may currently be in discussion about the tender helping the Leafs with their current playoff run as they continue to play well in the final weeks of the season...not something we're accustomed to see from Toronto.

James Reimer, the Leafs current starter, has been playing very well so far this season, and it leads most to believe that the Leafs would not be interested in acquiring a goalie if it means giving up any assets. I feel that, given the circumstance and the state of the Flames, the Leafs could pry him away for a 3rd round pick and perhaps a mid level prospect. While it is nothing superb for the Flames, it seems (like with Iginla) their hands may be tied once again when it comes to making moves. I suppose it`s what you get when you hand out so many NM/NTC's.

I suppose if we see a late scratch tonight just like we saw with Iginla, we could have another big move for the Flames.

Stay tuned...
