What? How? B's miss out on Iginla

According to multiple sources, everything was all set last night.

On the heels of a frustrating loss that saw the B's blow yet another third period lead to the Montreal Canadiens, a calming thought came with the "fact" that the Bruins were acquiring Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames at any moment.

I mean, all the signs were there. Boston was one of the four teams that the 35-year-old forward would approve a trade to, and late scratches to Alexander Khokhlachev, Matt Bartkowski, and even Iginla out in Calgary told us that the rumored package was in fact real and that No. 12 would be coming to Boston in search of a Cup.

As Boston went to bed, they were under the impression that they were acquiring the Flames' all-time leading scorer in exchange for Bartkowski, Khokhlachev, and a conditional first round pick dependent on Iginla re-signing with Boston.

And what they woke up to was -- uhh -- something completely different.

Sure, Iginla was donning black-and-gold. Just not Boston's.

Opting to move to Pittsburgh instead, the Penguins continued their load-up by adding the Flames' captain for college prospects Kenneth Agostino, Ben Hanowski, and the Pens' first round pick in 2013. For those unfamiliar, the feeling around Boston was akin to when the football gets yanked away from Charlie Brown. But in this version, the football gets yanked away, and Charlie Brown falls into a vat of acid. For the B's, it hurts.

It hurts that they're not getting Iginla, and it hurts that somebody they were already targeting prior to Iginla (Brendan Morrow), already ended up in Pittsburgh.

Just where do the Bruins go from here? I'm not sure, as there's not a lot of home run hitters out on the market, and with just six days to go, it's hard to tell where this one's going.

Peter Chiarelli will speak to the media at the Garden at 2 p.m. today. More then.
