Last night was a redeeming game for the Calgary Flames, and further for forward Roman Cervenka. They both bounced back after a long and tough drought beating St. Louis 3-2 at the Saddledome, furthering the notion that two teams exist in Calgary; a stronger home team and an abysmal road team.

Last night’s game began to trend toward another loss after the Flames spoiled a two goal lead at the beginning of the 3rd. Iginla’s game winner was a great effort as he didn’t give up on a thwarted break away and it earned him a goal. Overall, it was great to see the Flames not blow a lead and to fight back in the 3rd for the win…something we haven’t seen a lot of from this group. Kipursoff answered nearly everything thrown his way, stopping 36 of 38 shots; he was the definite star of the game last night, despite leitting in a few softies.

In spite of their win, the Flames were not flawless as it took 10 minutes before they even registered a shot on net and would be outshot 19-4 in the 2nd period. Though they were outshot 38-17 for the night, they would walk away with a win due to a solid effort form their goaltender and the 20 blocked shots as a team effort. Not to sound negative, but even with a win like last night, I felt as though the group still seems to be sluggish and missing a spark on the ice. Could just be me.

As mentioned, Cervenka had a two goal game (the first ever in his career), proving he belongs not only on the Flames, but on the ice every night. I’ll admit sometimes Cervenka is off and on but that can be attributed to ice time and Hartley’s apparent doubt for the forward. He was a healthy scratch Thursday in Nashville and only played 3:11 minutes in Dallas. Hartley seems to have had some restored faith in Cervenka and it’s well deserved. With two shots and two goals registered, one of which would be considered a highlight reel goal.

With Brenden Morrow being moved to the Penguins over the weekend, Iginla is at the top of the trade list and the speculation has continued to grow. As expected, Iginla wasn’t interested in adding to such speculation last night. He acknowledged that the deadline is now a week away but made no further comment.

According to TSN, Iginla allegedly listed the Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings as trades he’d approve. Last night the Penguin’s acquired Brenden Morrow from the Stars and are very likely no longer interested in Iginla. The fact that Morrow is no longer available to teams looking for that extra piece could arguably drive up the price for Jarome for the three remaining teams.

The Stars received a solid prospective defenseman in exchange for their captain, and interestingly enough, they are a current playoff team. Either way it looks like the Calgary Flames will need a new Captain come April 3rd as interest in Iginla climbs.

This recent win moves Calgary out of last place in the West but next they’ll head to Chicago to face the #1 Blackhawks. Let’s just hope that Iginla isn’t suited up for the opposing team on Tuesday night…how awkward would that be…
