Star Gazing: Morrow for Morrow?

According to multiple media outlets, Dallas Stars captain Brenden Morrow has waived his no-trade clause and agreed to a trade to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 34-year-old power forward, who has six goals and 11 points in 29 games this season, had spent his entire professional career in the Stars' organization.

Morrow was slowed last year by lingering neck and shoulder injuries, and his role in the Stars' offense has been gradually reduced ever since. However, he did have a briefly productive stint on a line with Jamie Benn and Jaromir Jagr earlier this season.

The captain will be missed in Big D. Apart from his ability to score clutch goals and alter the momentum of a game with a turnover-causing hit or well-timed fight when his team needed an emotional spark, he was one of the NHL's most respected locker room leaders. The logical choice to succeed Morrow as captain is Jamie Benn, but that announcement will have to wait for later.

The reported trade return from Pittsburgh is defenseman Joe Morrow, who was the Penguins' 1st-round pick (23rd overall) in the 2011 Draft. Although the 20-year-old has had his ups and downs in his rookie pro season in the American Hockey League, he is a player with solid NHL potential to add to an existing group of promising young Dallas defensemen at the NHL (Brenden Dillon) and AHL (Jamie Oleksiak, Patrik Nemeth) levels.

Considering that Brenden Morrow was an impending unrestricted free agent and was unlikely to be re-signed by the Stars for next year, Stars' general manager Joe Nieuwendyk extracted a valuable return if the reported Morrow-for-Morrow deal is indeed accurate.
