It is game day for a matinee in Denver as the Predators tangle with the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center. It is a struggling Avalanche team that is waiting for the Predators as the Av’s are only one point out of the basement of the Western Conference. The team has been distracted by the Ryan O’Reilly controversy and certainly has not lived up to preseason expectations.

Colorado is led by Matt Duchene and PA Parenteau and has gotten some excellent goaltending from Semyon Varlamov but the team can’t seem to put together decent performances on a consistent basis.

The injury situation for Nashville is getting better, Patric Hornqvist has been removed from IR and is listed as probable for today’s game. The Av’s list is more extensive; Steve Downie, Erik Johnson, Gabriel Landeskog, and Ryan Wilson are all listed as out. J.S. Gigerre has rejoined the team after a personal leave. Nashville has been riding outstanding goaltending and stellar defense to stay in the upper echelon of the west but offensive woes continue to trouble.

Nashville has swept the past two season series from Colorado, game time is 2pm with coverage on Fox Sports Tennessee and the Predators Radio Network. This is the start of the third of nine sets of back-to-backs for Nashville, the team will be back home tomorrow night for a Central Division showdown with Detroit.

Random Notes

- Tomorrow night’s opponent, the Detroit Red Wings are on a three game winless streak, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Minnesota Wild yesterday. They blew a 2-0 lead in the contest.

- Very cool doubleheader at Soldier Field in Chicago yesterday.

- P.A. Parenteau is the Av’s leading scorer so far this season, potting seven goals and posting 4 assists in 13 games, although those seven goals came in the Av’s first nine games, he has been held goal-less since then.

- The Predators have a very good record in matinee’s, 22-7-8… but the hold a pedestrian 3-3-0 mork on President’s Day.

- Two other matinee’s today, Ottawa @ New Jersey and Philadelphia @ the Islanders. Both start at noon central.

- Chicago just keeps rolling, they are now 12-0-3 and the Blackhawks have their eyes on the NHL record of 16 consecutive games with points to start a season. The last two teams to set that record have gone on to win the Cup.

- Jaroslav Halak is almost ready to take over between the pipes in St. Louis. Expect to see him start either tomorrow or Wednesday.

- Uh-oh… Peter Laviolette has gotten the dreaded “vote of confidence” from Flyer GM Paul Holmgren.
