The Calgary Flames have placed both of their current backup goalies, Karlsson and Irving, on waivers. While there is no question that Kiprusoff would be playing the majority, if not entire shortened season, the Flames to date have a large question mark when it comes to the next goalie in line.

Although both goalies will not likely be picked up, I could see some interest from a few teams in Karlsson. Neither goalie has really impressed over the last few seasons with Calgary and which ever, if not both, pass through waivers will likely be sent down to the Abbotsford Heat. I argue that the Flames have not developed their goaltenders very well over the past few seasons. Having a tender like Kiprusoff who can play so many games, so well is always nice to have…but at some point the team needs to allow ice time for their backups, too.

Kiprusoff is nearing the age where his production and games played could start to decline, and without solid goaltending the team could find themselves securing less wins. Placing both goalies on waivers with only a few days left before their home opener is a little strange. I have a feeling that Feaster might have something up his sleeve, or they have had discussions with a certain goaltender playing in the KHL. There should be more to this over the next day or two, as they will need to assign someone as their backup before Sunday…and I don’t imagine either Irving or Karlsson will be present.

Incase you weren’t able to pick up on my, oh so subtle hint…I was referring to Karri Ramo, who was believed to be returning to the Flames sometime this year or the next. He has been playing quite well in the KHL and fans are hopeful for his return.

It’s no secret that whoever does take over the backup duties this year will not see much ice time either way. Whether the Flames are looking outside of their organization for improvements in their future netminders, are considering calling up one of Brust or Taylor who are currently playing for the Heat, or have knowledge that Ramo may be coming back to the NHL sooner than later is left to be seen.

As mentioned, Kiprusoff has proven he is capable of playing 90% of the season and has remained consistent, but he is nearing an age where a back up will be vital to the Flames. A goalie of his caliber can only play 72+ games each year for so long until injuries (knock on wood) start appearing, or fatigue begins to settle in. With that being said, none of Irving, Karlsson, Taylor, or Brust are in shape to handle an active backup position in the NHL, to no fault of their own.

Calgary needs to start developing their backup goalies so that when they do need to call on them, they are primed. At this point I would argue that, behind Kiprusoff, the Flames have very limited knowledge of the talent level of their prospects due to the small sample size of NHL games played.
