The cavalcade of Roberto Luongo trade rumors continue through the weekend, in spite of GM Dave Nonis stating that the Leafs will not trade any of their young assets to acquire the 33 year old goaltender.

Reporter David Pagnotta indicated that "the Canucks are looking for a package that includes center Tyler Bozak, defenseman Carl Gunnarsson and prospect Nazem Kadri from the Leafs", which should be more aptly described as the "wish list" of Vancouver GM Mike Gillis.

In spite of the fervor and constant volume of rumors that conclude that Luongo is Toronto bound, the only way that will be the case is if the Canucks price comes down precipitously.

At this point, it appears that a campaign is being waged, drumming up a list of potential destinations.....Philadelphia, Chicago, Edmonton and the old favorite(Florida), but it always comes back to Toronto, because the Leafs appear to be the only ones willing to overpay to get Luongo.

Nonis is not a fool and must realize that trading prospects and inexpensive roster players for a veteran goaltender whose team would be all but glad to move him would be unwise, simply because the contract that Luongo has is such an albatross that it would constitute a great financial risk to a number of clubs.

This has all the makings of the next Tomas Kaberle saga, with a rumor of a Luongo deal popping up after every Leafs win or Canucks defeat.

The Toronto Marlies endured severe winter weather in Newfoundland, as they split two games against the St. John’s IceCaps over the weekend. The first of back to back games was scheduled for Friday night, but was postponed to Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, the Marlies recovered from surrendering the opening goal 12 seconds into the game, scoring three goals in the first period from Keith Aucoin, Spencer Abbott and Greg Scott. St. John’s Eric O’Dell scored his second of the game in the middle frame to cut the lead to 3-2, but the Marlies pulled away in the third, as Joe Colborne, Jerry D’Amigo and Carter Ashton scored in a 6-2 victory.

Colborne had three points(all coming on the power play) and Jussi Rynnas made 19 saves for his sixth victory of the season.

In the Sunday afternoon matinee, the two clubs traded goals in the first forty minutes. Paul Ranger scored on the power play and O’Dell scored his eighth of the season in the first, while team captains Jason Jaffray and Ryan Hamilton traded goals in the middle frame.
Hamilton’s goal was scored on a penalty shot during a Toronto power play.

St. John’s Kevin Clark broke a 2-2 tie with 9:34 remaining in the third to give the IceCaps the lead and then scored the insurance goal in the final minute.

Rynnas made 33 saves in a losing effort.

The Marlies are 22-11-1-2 on the season, leading the AHL North Division by five points over Abbotsford and have five days off before playing again, in Binghamton against the Senators Friday night.
