Former Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke gave his first interview following his dismissal on Wednesday to Toronto Star columnist Damien Cox, stating that he was as caught by surprise at his firing as the fans and media were.

“I was floored, and I still am stunned. I’ve never been fired before.”

Burke indicated that he was heading to catch a flight Wednesday morning to New York to attend the NHL board of governors meeting when he received a phone call from Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment chief operating officer Tom Anselmi. Anselmi told Burke to come to the team’s offices where he was advised of the club’s decision to relieve him of his duties.

“I’m so grateful I had a chance to run the crown jewel franchise of the NHL.” Burke said. “I’m grateful to have been given the chance to live in Toronto. I love this city and I am grateful for the support of the fans.”

Since being dismissed, the 57 year old Burke has tried to keep things as normal as possible, picking up his kids from school, going to the movies, getting up for an early AM workout and going to his favorite coffee shop, but he may have fallen prey to a bit of fan retribution, as the back window of his car was shattered.

“I don’t know if it was a disgruntled fan or not, but they didn’t steal anything.”

Burke is trying to come to grips with the loss of his job, but is still employed by MLSE in a senior advisory role, as he has two years remaining on the six year deal he signed in 2008.

He states that he intends to do everything possible to help long time friend and new General Manager Dave Nonis in a consulting role.

“I think I can help,” Burke said. “I’ve been at this for a while. I have my name on the Stanley Cup. I’ll do whatever I can.”

Burke plans to hold a press conference at Air Canada Center at 11am on Saturday, which could be as interesting as any game the Maple Leafs play this season.
