As the days go by, things continue to get shadier and shadier regarding Ilya Kovalchuk's NHL status and where he will be playing this year and beyond.

While I still ultimately believe Kovalchuk will be back in New Jersey and playing January 19th when the New Jersey Devils open their season, likely against the New York Islanders, Kovalchuk's agent, Jay Grossman, wouldn't confirm that when given the opportunity.

I've reached out to Grossman, who usually is pretty quick to respond to my inquiries, four times over the last 48 hours and he declined to comment on the situation.

Kovalchuk will be in the lineup for SKA St. Petersburg today in regular season action and is expected to stay until at least Sunday when the All-Star game is over before he returns to New Jersey, if he does.

SKA General Manager and former New Jersey Devil, Alexei Kasatonov, will "do everything possible" to keep Kovalchuk a member of SKA this year and beyond. By doing everything possible, I assume Kasatonov means finding a way to come up with much more money than Kovalchuk is already making in New Jersey to make it worth while to stay.

As I've said, I still expect him to return but the fact we keep hearing these rumors and his camp won't shut them down when given the chance makes me wonder.
