According to reports from Roman Jedlicka, Roman Cervenka would like to be back in Calgary for training camp and his agent, Ales Volek, says he seems to be OK to fly back to Canada.

This is good news for the Flames as many were worried the season would start without a few players who have been recently injured, including the likes of Hudler, Bouma, and Baertschi. Juri Hudler suffered a minor slice to the neck and should be ready for the beginning of the season. Lance Bouma is out with a season ending knee injury and Baertschi just returned from missing 13 games due to a neck injury.

With that being said, the team will only be missing a few players which, all things considered, should not affect their line up too bad. TJ Brodie and Roman Horak will return from the Abbotsford Heat, as well as Steve MacCarthy and Steve Begin who will be joining the team during training camp on a Professional Try Out.

Over the next few weeks, we will get back into the main discussions regarding the Calgary Flames. There are several things to be discussed with this team, and this shortened NHL season will certainly bring about much more debate than normal. Many believe the Flames may have a disadvantage this upcoming year, as not only do they have a new coach, but they will not have very much time to learn new systems and develop chemistry. There is always optimism, though.

A shortened season could benefit guys like Iginla, Tanguay, and Kiprusoff who have been known to have slow starts or certain periods of disengagement. Any success that comes out of this season will come from the veteran players being able to find their games quickly and have fun. If the team struggle out of the gate and/or do not respond to their new coach’s systems…we may see the team fall apart and Feaster get to work.

While I have always held that moving Iginla would be the best option for this club at this time, there is no doubt that if the Flames buy into Hartley’s system…Iginla and management would likely entertain an extension.

What do you guys think? Would you rather see the team buy into Hartley’s system immediately, get some chemistry going and make the playoffs?...Or would you rather bite the bullet, let them miss the playoffs for a fourth straight year, and look to move guys like Iginla, Kiprusoff, Tanguay, Bouwmeester?
