It’s time to stop Kane-ing around

Ahh Evander, what are you thinking when you go to the city of sin?

If you are just now opening up your Twitter feed you have seen the flurry of activity which erupted when Evander Kane posted the photo below in a series of tweets last night from Las Vegas.

“Look Ma, no coins”

Insert internet meme joke here…

Kane is the assistant PA rep for the Winnipeg Jets and Ron Hainsey must wonder just what is going on with his union brother right now.

Make what you want of it, but if you happened to hear me on the radio this morning on TSN 1290 Winnipeg, you know it’s not time to take the image seriously. The one thing you should look at with a critical eye is this: if Kane cannot learn from basic mistakes, especially PR ones, what’s going to happen when he has to deal with the harder, bigger complex decisions like say a CBA?

The funny thing in it all is the desperate attempts to start a friendship with Floyd Mayweather via Twitter. That’s all a 21 year old potential superstar needs is Floyd Mayweather to guide him. Scott Brown, the media relations guru at TNSE, must be beside himself right now knowing that he cannot intervene on Kane’s behalf and that of his employer Mark Chipman, a man known for discretion and class.

Kane is not alone in his mistakes in life- we all make them as do many pro-athletes who are thrust into fame and subsequent infamy. However, with the bulk of his career ahead of him, a large contract to play up too and one PR disaster already behind him, just what is Evander Kane looking to be?

That’s something only Kane, his agent and business manager know but I would hope that it’s something they review and soon. What we are seeing a young man evolve into may be something TNSE and more than a few teams have no desire partake.

Kane needs to be known for what he does on the ice, as a hockey player, not what he does away from it. It’s all that much harder when he’s locked out but as the smart guys on the Big Show on 1290 said this morning, Kane needs that care and support of the greater Jets’ family. It’s those intrinsic values that cannot be written into a CBA which matter for the success of many young NHL stars. Clearly Evander Kane needs it and the PA would do well to remember that not all owners and franchises treat players poorly, they do provide a lot of support. Kane may be showing the signs of what happens when that support network is lost and in the long run it will only cost him, everyone is replaceable.
