The Toronto Marlies made it a clean sweep of the three game weekend this afternoon with a 5-4 victory over the Lake Erie Monsters at Ricoh Coliseum.

Team captain Ryan Hamilton and Jake Gardiner scored twice and Nazem Kadri scored his third goal in the last two games. Spencer Abbott had three assists and Mark Owuya made 25 saves for the Blue and White, who moved into second place in the AHL’s North Division after wins over rival Rochester and Lake Erie.

With their pair of goals, Hamilton and Gardiner tied Matt Frattin for the club lead with seven goals.

David van der Gulik, Andrew Agozzino, Mike Connolly and Bill Thomas scored for the Monsters.

As traditional with his past tendencies, Coach Dallas Eakins brought put some fresh troops in the lineup after playing on consecutive nights, but conspicuous by his absence from the lineup was Joe Colborne, who has only 6 points in 18 games and is not struggling with any injuries.

His was replaced in the lineup by Spencer Abbott, as Kadri was moved to the middle. Abbott assisted on both Hamilton goals and Gardiner’s opening goal in the first period.

“Joe was a healthy scratch and just moving parts in and out.” Eakins said “It’s a hard decision who you are going to take out…..you got a guy with Abbott coming in, he’s more of a power play guy, a skill guy and so we chose to take Joe out and we’ll work Joe back in next weekend.”

The 24 year old Hamilton, ON native who scored 21 goals and 41 assists for the University of Maine in his senior season, has nine points(1 G, 8 A) in just six games and is playing well enough to give the Marlies coach an option if Colborne continues to slump.

"Abbott had the points, made some great offensive plays and that’s what we need from him.” Eakins said

Toronto will now be idle until Saturday, when they face Rochester for the third time in four games.

It may be little reason for optimism, but the NHLPA has agreed to Commissioner Gary Bettman's proposal of a players/owners only meeting. The meeting will take place at some point on Tuesday. The group of players has not yet been announced, but Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of MLSE will be part of the six man contingent, including supposed hardline owner Jeremy Jacobs of the Boston Bruins.

There needs to be some progress, some compromise made from both sides if there is a chance to get a season of reasonable length started by late December or early January.

We shall see if this idea will be a first step in the right direction or as useless an endeavor as mediation.
