Flames NCAA Prospects

Jon Gillies
Goaltender Providence College Drafted: Round 3 / 75th Overall / 2012
Gillies’ win loss record can be deceptive without looking a little further into his stats. With a record of 6-5-1 it may be easy to overlook this young net minder. However, looking at his GAA (1.87) and SV% (0.932) a different story unfolds. A big net minder who loves to challenge shooters rather than stay deep in his net he has all the tools that would make a successful goaltender. The knock on him is that he needs to improve his footwork and rebound control to really jump up to the next level.

John Gaudreau
Left Wing Boston College Drafted: Round 4 / 104th Overall / 2011
Following up on his PPG pace from last year Gaudreau is nearly on a 2 point per game pace this season. With 19 points in just 11 games he is continuing to prove that his offense was never a questions mark. The biggest concern about him is his size. At only 5’-7” and 155lbs he will have to bulk up in hopes to ever make it far at the pro level. However, he is extremely quick and shifty forcing opposition players to miss checks and lose position on him. Many liken him to Martin St Louis when watching him play, but even so, improvement in the size and strength areas are a must for this kid to succeed moving forward.

Nicholas Larson
Left Wing Notre Dame Drafted: Round 4 / 108th Overall / 2008
Not sure if we will ever see Larson play a pro game. Choosing to finish his schooling Larson plays a checking line role with ND. He isn’t going to wow you with any numbers but he is not afraid to mix them up and stand up for his team mates. If he does pursue a hockey career it will hinge on him being an effective shut down winger who agitates and plays a strong defensive game.

Mark Jankowski
Centre Providence College Drafted: Round 1 / 21st Overall / 2012
A lot was said about this surprise choice in the first round this past draft but the truth is, since making the switch to the NCAA Jankowski has been performing admirably with 4 goals and 4 helpers in 12 games. This tall centre has been praised as a guy who never takes a shift off and has elite passing skills. One of the biggest things in his favour is that he seems to be able to create opportunity on his own or with his line mates. The only knock on him is his weight. At 6’-2” and only 170lbs he needs to fill out that frame of his in order to be a success moving forward.

Marr DeBlouw
Centre Michigan State University Drafted: Round 7 / 186th Overall / 2012
Could this guy be a late round pick that grows into a decent pro? The first thing you notice about DeBlouw is that he continues to get better. His curve seems to veer upwards dramatically. In his first year in the NCAA he is playing a nearly a PPG pace with 11 P is just 12GP. That being said, the book on him is that for him to succeed at the NHL level, he will need to emphasize his speed and defensive awareness. With a little weight added to his frame he could turn out to be a very dependable checking centre who can pitch in on the score board.

John Ramage
Defense University of Wisconsin Drafted: Round 4 / 103rd Overall / 2010
Another guy who seems to be focused on completing his schooling Ramage is now in his fourth year at the U. of Wisconsin. A capable defensive D-man he isn’t ever going to have big offensive numbers. A patient player who has the poise to move the puck out of the zone effectively he seems to have developed into a strong leader on the back end of his team. Don’t be surprised to see him signed to an entry level deal this coming summer.
