After months of waiting, the Denver Cutthroats finally get to take to the ice for their first regular season game tonight at the Denver Coliseum.
In the lineup will be three Avalanche Prospects, goaltenders Kent Patterson and Kieran Millan and defenseman Gabriel Beaupre while Cutthroats coach and former NHL player Derek Armstrong is itching to get things started.
“Hockey was my life for 35 years,” Armstrong said. “It’s extremely exciting for me (to be back).”
Also joining the team is NHL defenseman and former Av Kyle Quincey. While other players are going overseas to play hockey, Quincey decided to sign with the Cutthroats to help them any way that he could
“After spending some time with (Cutthroats owner John) Hayes, I realize we have a common desire to further the development of youth hockey in Colorado which is a primary focus of the Cutthroats,” said Quincey. “Being able to do that while playing for a coach who has helped me throughout my career, and staying home in Denver, is an ideal situation for me considering the circumstances.”
The team was also bolstered by two players from the Avs' American Hockey Affiliate the Lake Erie Monsters, who assigned Jamie MacQueen and Ben Wilson to the team on Tuesday.
“Both Jamie and Ben are good, young, blue-collar forwards that we’re happy to add to the mix,” said Cutthroats Head Coach Derek Armstrong in a statement. “We want to be a team that works hard every night for three periods, and both of them fit the mold of the kind of team we’re building here.”
According to the Cutthroats press release, the 24-year-old MacQueen appeared in five games last season for Lake Erie after completing a four-year career at Bemidji State University where he tallied 24 goals and 23 assists in 147 games.
The Cutthroats take the ice tonight and Saturday at 7:05 MST, taking on the visiting Missouri Mavericks.
