Ron Rolston has named his captain for the 2012-13 season. The second year Amerks coach opted to go outside the Sabres "family" by selecting recently signed centre Kevin Porter as his captain. Sabres draft choices TJ Brennan and Mark Mancari will serve as alternate captains to Porter. Curious move in that Porter has only been signed to a one year contract by Rochester.

Personally, I'd have named either Luke Adam or Brayden McNabb as my captain. Each are high draft choices who have been paying their due inside the organization for the past couple of years.

Kevin Oklobzija of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle spoke with Rolston to get his take on the Porter pick:

Porter was named captain of the Rochester Americans by coach Ron Rolston on Tuesday. He announced the decision to the team following practice at Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester Community War Memorial.

“He works hard and there’s a lot of experience from other organizations that he brings us,” said Rolston, whose team opens the American Hockey League season on Friday at home against the Syracuse Crunch.

This was no dictatorial decision, however. Rolston said it came after consultation with his staff as well as the players.

There were two primary reasons Porter was selected: “His experience and the fact he has already come in and got a lot of respect from his teammates,” Rolston said.

Porter was captain at the University of Michigan in his senior year of 2007-08. He wore the “A” as an alternate captain for the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage in 2009-10.

Oklobzija tweeted on Tuesday that Connor Knapp has won the back-up goalie job in Rochester for this season. Williamsville natove David Leggio will man the cage as the starter.

Knapp, the 6'5 215 skyscraper from York, NY was locked into a battle with Nathan Lieuwen (Kootenay Ice alum).

Knapp starred at the University of Miami (Ohio), where he won 46 games in his four season of NCAA hockey.
