Cody Hodgson told me August expects a lot from himself. The Lindy Ruff, Ron Rolston, and Darcy Regier are expecting big things, on and off the ice, from Hodgson as well.

That explains why Hodgson showed up to the rink on Thursady to find the "C" stitched on his sweater.

T.J. Brennan and Kevin Porter wore the "A" for the Amerks, who lost4-3 to Wilkes Barre in the first exhibition game of the 2012-13 season.

Hodgson spoke with Kevin Oklobzija of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle after the game.

That may or not be who wears the letters during the regular season. Rolston said there are a lot of leaders and he’s still evaluating where letters will go.

Hodgson first learned he would wear the C when he arrived at the MCC rink and saw it on his sweater.

“I’ve got as much info as you do,” he said.

There’s no doubt the Sabres want to see Hodgson assume a leadership role with the Amerks, since they want the third-year centerman to be a focal point of the team in Buffalo once (or if) the NHL season starts.

Vanek Mania has applied the figure-four leg-lock to the hockey-crazed town of Graz, Austria.

The Sabres sniper has been presented his black #20 Graz 99ers sweater and new he’s ready to help his hometown team to leap from a third place tie to the top of the standings in the Erste Bank Hockey League.

Vanek’s Canadian-born head coach, Mario Richer, can smell what HDTV’s got cookin’ :
"You can tell here in the city. There is something very special for the organization, the city”. The best Austrian hockey player plays in Graz. This is very positive for all fans, but especially for those in Graz”

Richer compared the enormity of Vanek’s participation with the Graz 99ers squad to that of numbers 99 and 66 in North America. Richer feels like the young kids of Austria will want to imitate Vanek and perhaps push themselves to pattern their game after Vanek so that they too may play in the NHL some day.

“Especially for the young players it is extremely important. As seen in Canada every young player on TV Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux has tried to imitate and from the ice, so it's now our players. And young players throughout the country

Vanek makes his debut Friday October 5 2012 (19:15 Graz time) [email protected]
