The Swedish paper Sport-Expressen reported this morning that Maple Leafs defenseman Cody Franson was on the verge of signing with Brynas of the Swedish Elite League. That report was confirmed this afternoon by a variety of sources. There are some reports that the deal is for the entire year, but according to the Globe and Mail's James Mirtle, the contract has an out clause that would allow him to return to the NHL if the lockout ends.

The 25 year old blueliner's status was in question throughout the summer, as he was unable to reach an agreement with Toronto after becoming a restricted free agent in July.

Acquired from Nashville in July, 2011 along with Matthew Lombardi for Brett Lebda and Robert Slaney, Franson lost his spot in the Leafs top six to rookie Jake Gardiner at the beginning of last season and spent significant time in the press box through the first two months. He only began to get regular playing time after Mike Komisarek suffered a broken arm in late November.

In 57 games with the Blue and White, he registered five goals and 16 assists, along with 22 penalty minutes, but was mostly relegated to the bottom pairing and second power play.

Franson expressed frustration with the Leafs at the lack of a defined role with the club and stated publicly that he would not re-sign until that was determined. It was thought that he could be used as a piece in a deal to acquire a veteran goaltender during the off-season, which could be the sole reason for the out clause in his European contract.

Toronto still retains his NHL rights as he remains a restricted free agent and if he intends on continuing his career in North America, he would have to sign with Toronto or with a team that would provide compensation to the Leafs for his rights.

Do you consider the departure of Franson impactful or inconsequential?
