Does another NHL lockout have you down? Cheer up! The Anaheim Ducks have signed defenseman Cam Fowler to a five-year contract extension!

That means the 20-year-old will be in Anaheim through the 2017-18 season. Terms of the deal were not immediately made public. (UPDATE: We now know it for $20 million over five years. What a steal!) Yay! I'd trade months of no hockey for that kind of news any day!

Wait....what?

Obviously I'm joking - this is actually very good news for Anaheim. Fowler is an important part of any Ducks future success. Ducks GM Bob Murray agrees with me and seemed thrilled to have his young defenseman locked up for at least five more years.

"We're excited to sign Cam to a long-term contract," general manager Bob Murray said. "He's a character kid with a great chance to become an elite NHL defenseman."

The Ducks selected Cam 12th overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He had a decent rookie season, scoring goals and 30 assists in 76 games. He followed that up with five goals and 24 assists in 82 games in 2011-12.

I have always been tough of Fowler and his less than impressive plus/minus numbers, but the is no doubting his potential and what he has meant to Anaheim's blue line over the course of the last two seasons. The fact that he still cannot drink legally in the United States and yet he's played two full NHL seasons is impressive in itself. I fully expect him to have a true breakout season whenever hockey resumes.

Kudos to Murray for not waiting on this one.
