Since things have been so quiet lately, I decided that I would do profile some of the prospects drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the 2012 entry draft.
Damon Severson
Age - 18
Height - 6' 2" *
Weight - 198lbs *
Position - Defenseman
NHL Comparable - Brent Seabrook
Strengths - Severson is a big, strong two-way defenseman. He's very mobile for his stature and he is a very good puck mover. He's very calm and composed and he has a rocket for a shot. He brings a certain edge to his game and he doesn't shy away when the intensity rises and things get heated. Severson is also more than willing to drop the mitts and stick up for his teammates.
Weaknesses - While Severson has all the talent to be a good defenseman at the NHL level, he does need to patch up a few areas of his game. Several Western Hockey League scouts I've talked to have said that his game is a bit raw and he needs to work on his decision making. Both of those issues can be fixed over time.
Career projection - Second pairing (#3-4) defenseman - Severson has the skill set and stature necessary to become a very good defenseman at the next level, but he'll have to correct a few weaknesses in his game if he ever wants to develop into a top pairing defenseman. For that reason, I'd say becoming a solid second pairing guy is a more realistic expectation.
Note: Severson will play with the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL this season.
