Day #16 of Sabres in focus - Thomas Vanek

It would be nice to see Vanek hit 40 goals again this year. He's done it twice during his seven year NHL career.

The former 1st round (5th overall) pick has had at least five game winning goals in each of the past six seasons, including nine during the 2007-2008 season. He has even recorded a four goal night:

He's contributed all-around, including on the power play and in the shootout. During the 2008-2009 sesaon, Vanek netter 20 power play goals, the most of his career. He also has 16 shootout goals on 48 shots, a 33%. The around the world shot seemed to be his favorite move, but recently he's been ripping slap shots from just above the hash marks.

It's an understatement to say that Vanek is an important part of the Sabres. He's an assistant captain and has been relatively healthy up to this point. He's played at least 71 games each season.

He hasn't disappeared in the postseason either, at least not in the last three Sabres playoff appearances. Over those last three, Vanek has 18 points (13 G, 5 A) in 26 games.

So, what can we expect from Vanek this year? I think 40 goals is in his sight, but not just yet. Depending on whether the Sabres make another move, I think his point total could be different. However, I think he will perform well and indeed achieve 40 goals, something he hasn't done in four seasons.

My prediction: 42 G, 31 A, 73 PTS

Based on the polls from yesterday's post, readers have predicted McCormick's totals for this season.
My prediction: 8 G, 15 PTS, 75 PIM
Readers' prediction: 12 PTS, 102 PIM
