Market Finally Warming for Colaiacovo

Given the way the free agent market goes crazy for defensemen -- if a guy can play even a little, there will be at least one team willing to pay a premium for him -- I am among those who is surprised that Carlo Colaiacovo is still sitting out there on the market in late July.

Yes, Colaiacovo has an extensive injury history. Over the last three years alone, he's missed 50 games. That's a ton, especially since he's not a top-pairing defenseman. So it's not surprising that he wasn't one of the lead-off guys on the market.

Even so, Colaiacovo is still only 29 years. He's still a pretty good two-way defenseman and an above-average puck mover when healthy. When he was in the lineup for Ken Hitchcock's Blues last season, I thought Colaiacovo played reasonably well.

Now that the free agent defense market has thinned out, it looks like Colaiacovo is generating some interest. I have heard that Detroit, Dallas, Pittsburgh and at least one other team have kicked tires of late.

If Colaiacovo can stay healthy -- and that's a big if -- he can be one of those under-the-radar signings who helps to solidify a team's blueline. While it doesn't look like there an imminent signing within the next few days, I don't think he'll be on the market too much longer, either.
