Per the Washington Post’s Katie Carrera, the Leafs have signed 33 year old unrestricted free agent Keith Aucoin to a one year deal.

The center, who has played in the Capitals organization since 2008, agreed to a one year, two way deal for $650,000($350,000 at the AHL level).

The Watham, MA native has primarily been an effective American Hockey League player, with six 20+ goal seasons over his 11 year professional career and previously saw spot duty in Carolina and with the Capitals the last four seasons, but earned a regular fourth line role with Dale Hunter’s workmanlike group.

Aucoin played 27 games for Washington, scoring three goals and eight assists, as well as scoring two assists in 14 playoff games last season.

This signing is likely directed at re-stocking the Toronto Marlies, who lost veteran Philippe Dupuis to Pittsburgh earlier in the month and have yet to re-sign veteran Mike Zigomanis.

Aucoin was a key cog to the Hershey Bears consecutive AHL Calder Cup championships in 2008-09 and 2009-10 and with a number of key contributors expected to change for NHL jobs next September, Dallas Eakins’ club needed to bolster their offensive production and leadership.
