The Maple Leafs have avoided salary arbitration with winger Nikolai Kulemin, agreeing to a two year, $5.6 Million deal this morning.

Toronto filed for arbitration with the old winger earlier in the month. After scoring 30 goals in 2010-11 on a line with Mikhail Grabovski and Clarke MacArthur, Kulemin slumped to seven goals last season, which likely would have made a postive result in arbitration unlikely.

From the Leafs press release:

Kulemin, 26, has 68 goals and 84 assists for 152 points in four full seasons with Toronto. The forward has played in at least 70 games for the Maple Leafs in each of his first four NHL seasons. Kulemin is the team’s active leader in games played with 303. Kulemin was ‘even or plus’ in 57 games in 2011-12 and he missed the final 12 games of the season due to a finger injury.

He was Toronto’s second choice, 44th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.

Kulemin gets a pay increase of $600,000 and if the current rules for free agency continue in the next CBA, at the of the two year deal he will become an unrestricted free agent.

This is a good and cost-effective signing for the Leafs, as Kulemin should bounce back from an off year and score in the 20 to 25 goal range.
