The New Jersey Devils have announced that Scott Stevens and Matt Shaw have been hired as the team's new assistant coaches. Stevens is not at all surprise. Shaw is a little off the board. He most recently worked with the San Jose Sharks as an assistant. I'll have more on this tomorrow.

In the meantime, you can see my post from today on development camp and more below.

Some development camp related news has come out from the New Jersey Devils. Not big news, but news nonetheless. Here are some quick notes on that as well as the possibility of Steve Spott joining the Devils coaching staff.

- The Devils announced today that three players (Zach Aston-Reece, Philip DeSimone and Thomas Parisi) have been added to the development camp roster. Aston-Reece and DeSimone are centers, while Parisi is a defenseman.

I'm looking into this way too much, but I find it funny the Devils invited a player with the first name of Zach and a player with the last name of Parisi. That's awful close to you all know who.

On a serious note, these guys probably won't earn a contract of any sort. Bringing them in just allows the Devils to get a look at them and to help bring more bodies into camp for drills and scrimmages. Unless someone really impresses, I expect all three to be let go after camp.

- There are some rumblings out there that Kitchener Rangers Head Coach and General Manager, Steve Spott, who worked with Pete DeBoer during his days with the Rangers, is a strong candidate to join the Devils staff as an assistant coach.

While it would make sense in a few ways, it's not happening. Spott loves it in Kitchener and signed a contract extension that will keep him with the Rangers through the 2017-18 season. He's not leaving Kitchener. If he wanted out of Kitchener, he probably could have joined DeBoer when he signed in Florida a few years back. Oh, and to add more water to the fire, Spott has no out clause in his contract until 2016.

With all that said, Lou Lamoriello said yesterday that he expects the staff to fill out later this week.

- Yesterday's scrimmage at Devils development camp ended 0-0 in a shootout. Defenseman Reece Scarlett, who is coming off a very strong season in the WHL, scored the shootout winner. Someone asked me if they should be worried that none of the Devils forward prospects could fill the net. I said no for several reasons:

1. It's the first day of development camp.
2. These guys were all thrown on lines with players they've never played with before.
3. There were only two 20 minute periods + a five minute overtime period.
4. The goaltenders in camp, led by Keith Kinkaid and Scott Wedgewood, are very good.
