9:22 Saturday: So I have been duly informed it's "Layin' down the hammer" but I still think Hammer Time is funny. Come on! This is CLASSIC!
Some things just never get old. Except maybe those harem pants which -- I still have a pair.
11 pm Friday: Really?
It’s Travis Hamonic’s turn to do the Community circuit for the NY Islanders. A veteran of these things now, Travis has been meeting and greeting fans since 2010 when the 2008 draft pick started his Islander’ career with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
At only 21-years-old now, he is a cornerstone of the Islanders defense. If you think about it, has any young man grown up as quickly as Hamonic? No. And now, heading into the 2012-2013 season, it will be the last year of his three-year entry-level deal. But he really shouldn’t have anything to worry about when it comes to his next contract. Not "The Hammer."
James Wisniewski was traded from the Ducks to the Islanders, played 32 games and was then traded again to the Canadians in favor of the a very young pairing of Hamonic and MacDonald. It was a gamble that paid off for Garth Snow and now Travis is not just a top defenseman, but also a fan favorite.
So much so that he now has yet ANOTHER item in the Islanders apparel line. Although, this one, I’m scratching my head over. Yep, we have the Gremlin, the Moulstache and now we’ve got -- Hammer Time. The new t-shirt will be unveiled at Travis’ Team Store signing on Tuesday, July 17th. Hamonic will be signing autographs from 6:30 - 7:30 pm and the first 150 fans are guaranteed an autograph.
My thought on this item -- Travis Hamonic was born the very year that M.C. Hammer’s hit song “U Can’t Touch This” hit the charts. Many of Travis’ fans won’t make the connection. But hey -- it’s kinda cute.
Another item at the Team Store that should be purchased as it will be collector’s item of a sort is the Brooklyn Islander tee. Considering the Nassau saga over the Islanders and the Coliseum, it’s very possible it’s the vision of things to come.
Hamonic will also be at Islanders Ice Works Summer Hockey School this week and then one lucky fan gets to dine with him. But I’ll have more about that over the weekend.
