Meltzer's Musings: Quick Hits on Voracek, Prospect Camp

More and more, it looks like the Flyers will stand pat for the remainder of the summer apart from re-signing restricted free agents Jakub Voracek and Marc-Andre Bourdon. It still remains to be seen if Voracek can be signed to a multi-year deal or if the team and agent Petr Svoboda can only agree to another one-year deal with Voracek becoming a restricted free agent again next summer.

If Voracek is signed to a multi-year extension, the cap hit is going to be higher in the short term. There is mutual risk involved in such an arrangement. The Flyers risk overpaying a young player who has yet to reach the 20-goal mark and has produced 50 points once. The Voracek camp risks more more in future seasons beyond 2012-13, as the player currently appears slated to play on the Claude Giroux line next year and his production is likely to increase to new career highs in both goals and points.

Earlier this week, Tampa Bay signed winger Teddy Purcell to a three-year extension that will take his salary from $2.36 million to $4.5 million when the new deal kicks in for 2013-14. This is not really an apples-to-apples comparison to Voracek's situation but may still have some bearing on Voracek's future earning ability.

First of all, Purcell was one season away from becoming an unrestricted free agent. That inflates a player's market cost relative to one who will remain an RFA the following summer. Secondly, Purcell is coming off a 24-goal, 65-point season (both career highs) and his 51 points the previous year is also one point better than Voracek's best statistical year so far.

Nevertheless, it is not hard to make the argument that Voracek is already at least an equal if not better player than Purcell, who is nearly four years older than the Czech. Voracek was outstanding offensively down the stretch and through most of the playoffs, and was easily the Flyers best two-way winger last season (along with the smaller Matt Read). Voracek is just starting to tap into his full potential while Purcell is probably about as good now as he'll ever be.

Voracek made $2.25 million on his one-year contract last year. The next deal, if it's a one-year contract, will probably be a raise to about $3.25 million. Here's the thing: in a long-term deal, the Flyers and Svoboda almost certainly have different views on an appropriate salary for Voracek.

Realistically or not, you can bet Svoboda already has his eyes on setting the long-term contract salary bar a bit closer to what Purcell just got in Tampa or to what the Flyers gave to James van Riemsdyk ($4.25 million) a year ago in a six-year extension.

The Flyers, however, are one summer away from having to start negotiations on a monstrous long-term extension for Claude Giroux (making $3.75 million in the second year of his three year deal, and a final-year RFA in the summer of 2014). There is no way that, even if Voracek's next deal is for two or three years, it should pay him in the ballpark of what Giroux is getting.

Ultimately, I don't think it's going to be that tough for the Flyers to get Voracek signed for next year. But the discussions of a long-term contract can only be tabled for so long before it turns into a sticky situation. If Voracek is an RFA again next summer, it might not be a pretty situation for the Flyers (especially if the cap ceiling is lowered).

For his part, Voracek seems pretty unconcerned about the whole thing. He is currently in his hometown of Kladno, Czech Republic. He did a semi-promotional photo op this week for a Czech paper, tending bar at a restaurant/pub in Kladno that his father owns.

Also conveniently on hand when the cameras showed up were fellow Kladno natives and NHL players Ondrej Pavelec and Michal Frolik. Kladno's most famous resident, former Flyers winger Jaromir Jagr, was not there. But Jagr's girlfriend, Inna, came along to show support.

After yesterday's Trial on the Isle in Stone Harbor, NJ, the Flyers prospects return to the ice in Voorhees again today. Today and tomorrow's sessions will once again be devoted to skill development and off-ice conditioning. Saturday and Sunday will see the camp conclude with a pair of scrimmages.

All sessions, including the scrimmages, begin at 9 AM and are free to the public.

Later today on Philadelphiaflyers.com, the site will feature an article I wrote on 2012 draft pick Taylor Leier. In the days to come, there will be profiles of Reese Willcox, the team's crop of 2012 rookie free agent signees (Andrew Johnston, Matt Mangene and Mott Konan) and a story related to the scrimmages.
