Senators Join Bobby Ryan Sweepstakes and Ryan Getzlaf Talk

Thomas Paine once said, “These are the times that try men's souls." A quote that has more historic relevance then anything to do with hockey. If you're Bobby Ryan or Ryan Getzlaf that quote may have a different meaning to you these days.

Ryan's days are numbered and the list of teams wanting to acquire the four time 30-goal scorer continues to increase.

The Ottawa Sun is suggesting the Sens may jump into the Ryan chase.

"While the Senators believe top prospects Jacob Silfverberg and Mark Stone and newly-signed winger Guillaume Latendresse are going to battle for spots, don't be surprised if Ottawa is in the (Bobby) Ryan sweepstakes."

Looking up and down the Sens roster I don't see a whole lot that would entice Bob Murray to deal his disgruntled winger. A player like Colin Greening is interesting but not of the same caliber of Ryan. Forward Milan Michalek turns 28 this year and finally reached the 30-goal mark this past season.

If Murray is looking for a center he needs to look down the Sens depth chart a bit. Jason Spezza is off limits, leaving Kyle Turris and Zack Smith as his only options.

Defensively, Ottawa has nothing to offer after Erik Karlsson.

So while the Sens may be interested in Ryan they lack the pieces to swing a deal. Expect the Ducks to deal Ryan elsewhere.

Eklund is saying the Toronto Maple Leafs are very interested in Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf.

Since the first round of Ryan rumors I have said trading Getzlaf is the better option. Sometimes trading away the captain of sinking ship can help the ship remain afloat. Two seasons ago the New Jersey Devils traded away captain Jaime Langenbrunner and the team flipped a switch. The Devils went on an incredible second-half run and made an appearance in the Stanley Cup Final this year.

Getzlaf had a statistically awful season in 2011-12, but it goes beyond that. The Ducks captain has never been the swiftest of skaters and last season he looked as though he could barely move out there. He was beat to pucks and caught out of position on several occasions. Pretty tough to watch from the Ducks supposed top-line center.

He is a fan favorite and those are the toughest players to trade. I'm not sure what Anaheim could get in return for Getzlaf, but a change of scenery could do him and the team some good.

What do you think? Who would you keep if you were Murray, Ryan or Getzlaf? Or would you trade both and essentially start over?
