So much stuff going on with the Oilers right now, I'm about to explode.

Thank You and About Time
The Oilers announced today that they have re-signed forward Lennart Petrell to a one-year contract. Aside from Petrell being a decent penalty killer, he can play all three different forward positions...which makes him a possible replacement at center for Eric Belanger, once the Oilers finish wrapping a carpet around him and placing him in a trunk somewhere along the interstate.

So Much for That Idea
Goaltender Josh Harding signed a big contract today with the Minnesota Wild, which is too bad. He would have been an excellent 1b goaltender option for the Oilers.

Harding-Like Numbers for Dubnyk?
Based on Josh Harding's deal today, is it fair to suggest the Oilers will re-sign Devan Dubnyk to a three year, $6mil contract this summer ($2mil per season)? Sounds about right to me. We could look back at Dubey for $2mil per season in a couple of years and realize we have a real bargain on our hands. Quality goaltender who is just now finding his A game.

Oilers and Bobby Ryan?
Hearing the Ducks are entertaining offers for Bobby Ryan. I have no idea why the Ducks would do that, but whatever...it's a free country. If Ryan is actually available, teams are going to go nuts making offers for him.

Of course, the Leafs are in on Ryan. OMG, I wish there was a player in the NHL that didn't want to go to the Leafs. I am so sick of them getting all the star players every summer.

Could the Oilers do something wacky like offer the 1st overall pick for Ryan? There's something not right about this whole story. Either there's something bad about Ryan that no one realizes, or the Ducks have some sort of economic pressure forcing them to make a move. Is dealing Ryan the only way the Ducks can address their needs on D and with respect to depth? Something smells funny. If I'm Edmonton, I'm staying out of it.

Oilers and Jay Bouwmeester?
Talk continues that the Oilers have a big interest in acquiring JayBo. Why? The Oilers D needs an upgrade, and the team has a world of cap room to work with.

The big barrier in a deal is that if the Flames move Bouwmeester, then they will have a hole on D they need to fill. Obviously, the move would be done as a salary dump. I can't see the Oilers giving up Smid, Petry or Nick Schultz. Maybe Ryan Whitney and a prospect or the Oilers 2nd round pick?

At one time, Bouwmeester was one of the most overrated defensemen in the league. Ever since he received his big, stupid contract in Calgary, he's been one of the most underrated. He's not Drew Doughty or anything, but he's a legit Top 4 defenseman.

Oilers and Justin Schultz?
Nothing new on this front. Eklund has a rumor up suggesting the Oilers could deal the 1st overall to TO for Jake Gardiner and the 5th overall...once that happens, it's a natch that Justin Schultz will sign with Edmonton.

I don't doubt people are talking and this rumor is out there. Leafs GM Bryan Burke has pretty much said Gardiner is an untouchable and there's been no talk of moving him for anything/anyone. But then again, I don't believe a single thing GM's say, so who knows what the truth is here.

Oilers and a 2nd - Top 10 Pick
This is likely more tire kicking than anything else. I've heard Edmonton is wanting a second Top 10 pick. I've speculated Anaheim at #6 and Carolina at #8 are possible targets. I'm not sure something is possible with either team, because both the Ducks and Hurricanes are looking to immediately improve their clubs. The Oilers can offer kids and prospects, and very little else of immediate quality.

Here's a random thought I had though if the Oilers managed to pick up the Ducks 1st round pick: What if the Oilers were to draft center Alex Galchenyuk 1st overall, move one or both Sam Gagner and Ales Hemsky to get the 6th overall, and then drafted highly-skilled winger Teuvo Teravainen? Would a future Top 6 in Edmonton of Hall, Eberle, Nuge, Teravainen, Galchenyuk and Paajarvi appeal to Oilers fans?

Who's Gonna Win?
I've been asked about 100 times now if Ryan Nugent-Hopkins or Jordan Eberle are going to win a major award this week. Nuge is up for the Calder (top rookie) and Eberle is up for the Lady Byng (nicest guy). Nuge won't win the Calder; Gabriel Landeskog will. Eberle will win the Byng. I don't think any of the players in the NHL actually care about any of these dumb awards. Why? 1. This is hockey, not baseball...hockey is about the team, not the individual, 2. The only award that matters in hockey is the Stanley Cup, and 3. Nickelback is playing the show, which means, everyone there loses regardless.
