Congratulations to the Shawinigan Cataractes (means Waterfalls) for winning the Memorial Cup last night. It was their first win in franchise history and there are 58 teams who vie for it yearly. Wow! NY Islanders prospect, and Russian bad-boy Kirill Kabanov had an excellent game to cap off a good season of growth. Hopefully he gained more than just the 25 lbs he says he put on.

Thanks to the NHL Network for making it easy for us here in the states to actually watch it live. It’s the first time I have ever done so. But they really have to do something about those stupid air horns or whatever the hell was making that awful noise. Doesn’t it bother the players? Seriously. Stop it.

Shout-out to Rob Schremp who was in attendance to support his old Junior team the London Knights. Too bad he never turned towards the camera that was focused on him for a good 30 seconds. (“Robbie, this way! Robbie!)

Dale Hunter loses again. Awwweeee.

There was a depth signing in Islanders Country yesterday late in the evening, (no official press release yet) according to sources, John Persson has been signed by the NYI. Persson who played a few games with the Bridgeport SoundTigers after the Red Deer Rebels’ season was over. He must have impressed Brent Thomson and after reading his Twitter timeline, I am somewhat impressed too.

John seems to be a really good fit in all aspects. Take a gander at Matt Clausen’s excellent piece on him. Then take a gander at this photo of him in California. This is no scrawny kid. Welcome aboard John.

Now as it is Memorial Day, I am hoping that everyone has taken just a few minutes out of their day to thank the veterans and those who currently serve helping to keep your rights to freedom alive. Please take a few moments to read this excellent piece by Mark Willoughby, TheViewFrom111. Not just a hockey mind, but a thoughtful, intelligent man who does an excellent job explaining the American condition. Put him on your reading list.

Have a safe and happy holiday.
