Here's a quickie going into the Memorial Day weekend:

I'm hearing through a top source that Scott Mellanby, who used to play for Joel Quenneville and has served for the last two seasons as an assistant on the Blues' staff, will discuss the Hawks' assistant coach vacancy with Quenneville next week.

A former NHL captain, Mellanby scored 364 goals in the NHL and played a tough, physical game.
It was announced yesterday, he would not be returning to the Blues in order to pursue "other opportunities."

Mellanby told St. Louis media his heart isn't in coaching, so his discussions with the Hawks might be about opportunities other than coaching. But I am hearing he could be in line for the vacant assistant's job regardless.

DOUBTING THOMAS:

I heard this evening that the Hawks would have no interest in Tim Thomas as a $5 million rental next year. However, at a much more reasonable price, the team might have interest in Tomas Vokoun.

HABS OR HAB NOTS:

The Hawks might be talking with new Montreal GM Marc Bergevin about a variety of proposals. The Hawks are said to covet Max Pacioretty, however, Bergevin is likely going to hold on to the young star. Another player said to be on the Hawks' radar, Travis Moen, is also believed to be on Bergevin's keeper list. Center Tomas Plekanec could be another target for the Hawks.

Have a safe and happy weekend, everybody, and remember those who died for our flag.

All for now,

JJ
